A peak (from the English peak) is a local or global maximum of a cryptocurrency's price within a chosen time interval. After a peak is passed, quotes usually begin to decline, so traders carefully track such points on the chart. A peak can be either a short-term intraday fluctuation or a significant historical high to which the price does not return for a long time.
Why traders track peaks
- Identifying resistance zones where pressure from sellers increases.
- Assessing whether the market is overbought using indicators.
- Looking for points to take profit or to open short positions.
It is important to understand that it is practically impossible to accurately predict the moment of a peak: the cryptocurrency market is highly volatile, and one maximum may be followed by a new, even higher one. That is why experienced market participants rely not on intuition but on a combination of factors — trading volumes, price behavior near resistance levels and the overall market mood. The concept of a peak is closely related to the opposite term "bottom" (the minimum), and together they form the basic language for describing price movements.
